I’ve had this book on my list for a while because I’ve heard and read good things about it. I’m not kidding you, over-exaggerating, or tricking you when I say I couldn’t put this book down. Where’d You Go, Bernadette is hilarious and you just can’t help but want to read further and see what happens next.
Bernadette is a curious character who we know little about. We see her character unfold through her teenage daughter’s point of view, a gifted 8th grader who is just starting to learn about the world around her, and a series of letters and emails between characters in the book. The story unfolds through a bunch of documents that are chronologically organized, which is part of what makes it a fun read!
We’re made to believe free-spirited Bernadette is going crazy and throughout the book, we see her character appear to spiral out of control. We watch her and her husband grow distant and in a month’s time/as the book implies, we see her go missing! You’ll never guess where Bernadette is hiding!
Bernadette’s past is uncovered as we learn more about her character. We learn her opinions of Seattle’s wealthiest families (they aren’t her favorite people), discover why she and her husband fled Los Angeles for Seattle, and understand why she acts the way she does (which is very out of the ordinary).
There’s not much more I can say without ruining the book, but I guarantee the book is funny and that it’s a fast read! If you do want to learn more about the book, I found this The New York Times’s review to be a good article! It’s definitely become one of my favorite books and it’s one I wouldn’t mind reading over and over! As I was reading it, I really wanted to talk to people about the book, but no one physically around me had read the book yet so I was struggling to keep my mouth shut. Yes, I loved the book that much.
